Plus, there’s something about strolling through its historic quarters that hits just right on a chilly day.

Weather in Nice During Winter 

Nice, on the French Riviera, gets pretty pleasant winters with warm, sunny days thanks to its Mediterranean climate. 

Its winter temperature hangs at an average of 13.4°C (56.1°F).

It’s a cool off-season spot that beats freezing in other places of Europe, like Kirun and Jukkasjärvi in Sweden.

We didn’t even need a heavy winter coat here, just some layers for the evening. 

But, if you’re sensitive to cold temperatures, we greatly advise you to wear coats wherever you go so you’ll be toasty warm while exploring the city.

How Long Does the Sun Rise in Nice During Winter? 

Most days during winter in Nice are dry and sunny, with an average of 9 hours and a half of sunshine, perfect for street food markets and hilltop lookouts.

The sunrise is around 7:30 am to 8 am, which is pretty decent.

The earliest sunset goes down in December, hitting around 5 pm, while the latest one’s in February, chilling until about 6 pm.

Does It Rain In Nice During Winter?

Nice gets 5 to 7 days of rain each month during winter. It’s not a downpour, though, just a light rain, with the sun popping up every now and then. 

The monthly rainfall averages between 40.7mm to 78.7mm (1.6 inches to 3.1 inches), and November tends to be the wettest. 

We greatly advise you to bring waterproof shoes and an umbrella in case of occasional rain. 

Does It Snow in Nice? 

Nice rarely gets snow, especially in the downtown areas by the sea. So you don’t really need to pack a bunch of winter gear here during winter.

But you can actually go outside of Nice to places like Vence, which are up higher, for a chance to see snow more often.

This city is also a smart choice if you want to dodge harsh winter elsewhere.

In the daytime, it’s not too shabby, with temperatures hitting around 13.4°C (56.1°F). Evenings, though, can get a bit nippy, dropping to about 7.9°C (46.3°F). 

So, it’s not a bad idea to have an extra sweater or a jacket handy, especially if there’s a chance of some rain.

The weather in Nice stays pretty pleasant, even in the coldest times, making it great for wandering around the historic centers.

Plus, it’s not peak season, so it’s not that crowded. We have here some of the city’s landmarks that you shouldn’t miss during winter in Nice.

Marvel at the Architecture of Cathédrale Sainte-Réparate

If you find yourself strolling around Nice in the winter, don’t miss checking out Cathédrale Sainte-Réparate. This place is a real architectural spot in the Old Town. 

It’s a Baroque masterpiece from the 17th century, showing off some Italian Baroque influence. 

The exterior is made of white limestone bricks, and once you step inside, you’ll surely be in awe.

The interior is full of meticulous details that make you appreciate the craftsmanship. 

We loved visiting here during sunny afternoons because the natural light floods through the windows, highlighting the cathedral’s sophistication.

And if you happen to be here in December, you’re in luck because they have this elaborate nativity scene, or as they call it, a “crèche,” depicting the birth of Jesus.

Now, here’s a fair warning: this place doesn’t have heating, so make sure to wear warm clothes when you visit – layers are your best friend here. 

And keep an eye on the weather – rainy days might dim the natural light and can affect how well you can see those intricate artworks. 

Explore the History and Serenity of the Monastère de Cimiez

For some historical experience and good views, be sure to visit the Monastère de Cimiez up in the hills above Nice.

This Benedictine monastery has been around for a thousand years and is now a spot for prayer and quiet contemplation.

And if you wander around the cloisters, you can practically feel the centuries of monks doing their thing.

The cemetery is a cool spot, too, and that’s where some of the famous folks from Nice’s history are laid to rest, so it’s like a little glimpse into the past.

And don’t forget about the views of Nice and the Mediterranean from the lookouts. They were so gorgeous – one of the best we’ve seen in Nice.

Now, when you’re planning your winter getaway here, remember to pack a bit warmer because those hills can get a bit nippy. 

And keep it modest with your wardrobe, especially when you’re strolling through the active monastery and the holy spots.

For the schedule, the Monastère de Cimiez is open every day from 8 am to 7:30 pm on weekdays.

Note that it closes earlier, at 6 pm on weekends. Definitely worth checking out if you’re into history like us.

The Cathédrale Saint-Nicolas de Nice is right in the center of Nice, and its architectural style will surely interest you even when you just pass by.

Its look is actually a mashup of styles from different centuries. It has a Gothic vibe and some Romanesque Byzantine action – arches and mosaics.

The mix makes the front of the church look like a texture and pattern playground.

Inside, it’s a whole different scene. It’s got fancy decorations and a high ceiling.

Word to the wise for a quieter visit: roll in during the low season when the crowds are taking a breather.

Winter in Nice is just awesome for some chill sightseeing. The city has got these sunny vibes, making the streets and landmarks look extra cool.

Take a Walk Along the Scenic Promenade Des Anglais

If you’re ever thinking of taking a stroll in Nice in the winter, the Promenade des Anglais is the place to be. 

It’s this 7km stretch along the Baie des Anges that can really give you a relaxing vibe. Plus, the weather’s pretty cool, just around 13.4°C (56.1°F). 

You’ll catch sight of some 19th-century mansions here, palm trees, and some great bay views as you stroll along.

There are a couple of things you don’t want to miss. First up, there’s Castle Hill at the eastern end – a nice park with some great scenery. 

Then, there’s the Memorial to the Victims of the 2016 Terrorist Attack. That memorial was a sobering sight. Definitely worth a moment of quiet reflection.

Keep going, and you’ll hit the iconic Hotel Negresco, a vintage 1912 hotel that’s worth a look. 

If you head west near the harbor, you’ll find Promenade du Paillon Park. Plus, there are lots of cafes and restaurants worth exploring. 

One thing to keep in mind – this place is a crowded spot and can be a haven for pickpockets, so make sure to keep an eye out.

One of our favorite spots in Nice is the Promenade du Paillon, which turns into a pretty chill urban escape during winter. 

It’s a 12-acre park with fountains and sculptures, and it has this cool landscape with lots of pathways and grassy spots for you to relax.

And if you have kids, there’s a play fountain and big animal sculptures that will surely entertain them.

So, feel free to visit the park every day from 7 am to 11 pm.

Just some heads up: check the weather before heading out. Also, steer clear if it’s pouring because the grass can get muddy.

One highlight is All Saints’ Day on November 1st.

It is a public holiday with a touch of local culture – think religious processions and folks placing flowers on graves.

The Marathon des Alpes-Maritimes Nice-Cannes usually happens on the first Sunday of November.

Take the Tram

Trams are like the sleek, modern way to roll around Nice. They come every 3 to 5 minutes. 

Just for €1.70, you can get wherever but in the same direction for around 70 minutes.

So, there’s no need to stress about transfers – they’re free within that time frame.

Ride the Train

If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous and want to explore nearby places like Monaco or Cannes, the trains are your budget-friendly buddies. 

They start at around €16, and if you plan on doing it often, grab a pass to save some euros. Efficient and easy – just the way you like it.

Call a Taxi

Sometimes, if you just want your own space, taxis are your best option for that.

They are hanging around at all the touristy spots, ready to take you wherever. Their normal rate usually starts at €5.50.

But just so you know, you can also book an Uber, which is usually cheaper than taking a taxi.

For those days when you’re feeling a bit more relaxed, take a stroll. Nice’s city center is quite walkable, and there are free walking tours you can avail yourself of.

You’ll get to experience strolling through the medieval streets of Èze with its charming cobblestone streets and the Saint-Paul-De-Vence, where art galleries are on every corner.

We greatly recommend starting your journey in Biot to admire the village’s famous hand-blown glassware.

The glass blowers were incredible to watch, and we couldn’t resist picking up a beautifully crafted vase.

Then head to Opio to take in the views of ancient olive groves and visit a 15th-century olive oil mill where you can sample local delicacies. 

Next, make your way to Gourdon, a hilltop village with panoramic vistas of the French Riviera, as well as a 9th-century castle and lush gardens.

Saint-Tropez and Port Grimaud Day Trip

Winter’s honestly the perfect time to visit Saint-Tropez and Port Grimaud. You can ditch the crowded summer scene for a way more chill vibe. 

Just catch an early 8:30 am shuttle from Nice, and you’ll make it to “Little Venice” Port Grimaud by noon.

Then hop on a quick boat cruise over to legendary Saint-Tropez, the playground to the rich and famous. 

When you reach Saint-Tropez, make sure to stroll around its quiet, cobblestone streets, pop into quirky local boutiques, and maybe grab an espresso or crepe if you find an open cafe. 

Just some tips: bring that sweater and windbreaker for sure, since temperatures can hit as low as 3°C and sea breezes add an extra winter bite. 

Oh, and opening hours might be different for the off-season, so confirm ahead of time that your must-see spots are open.

Day Trip to Monaco, Monte-Carlo, and Eze

If you’re looking for a cool coastal getaway this winter, consider this day trip to Monaco, Monte-Carlo, and Eze.

Just make sure to bundle up, as rainy or chilly weather is possible.

Start by checking out the medieval hilltop village of Eze – it has cute little craft shops that will surely amaze you.

And, of course, definitely visit Monaco and its old town with narrow streets and historic buildings like the Prince’s Palace. 

Then, to complete your trip, make sure to roam the Grand Prix circuit in Monte Carlo.

Treat yourself to some people-watching over coffee at Casino Square’s fancy cafés.
