When we walked around the city and looked at the displays, we could see how talented the city’s artists were.
It also showed us the city’s strong religious roots that go way back.
The place that topped our list for the best nativity scene was the Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, a stunning Gothic church right in the center of Venice.
It’s an absolute must-visit that you wouldn’t want to miss out on.

The Christmas season is the ideal time for us to visit Venice, especially for exploring its wonderful Christmas markets.

Christmas Market at Campo Santo Stefano
One of the best Christmas markets you should visit is the Campo Santo Stefano – a popular one right in the city center.
We loved strolling through the stalls here that are filled with delicious freshly baked panettone and unique local gifts.
Don’t forget to try the hot mulled wine to keep warm!
Rialto Christmas Market
After that, you should check out the Rialto Market. During the Christmas season, it turns into a fun and festive Christmas fair.
Here, you can shop for handmade jewelry, tasty treats like frittelle, and more amidst the backdrop of the iconic Rialto Bridge.
Saint Nicholas Day
One of our absolute favorite times to visit Venice is around Saint Nicholas Day, also known as Natale di Vetro or the famous Glass Christmas.
It’s all about honoring the patron saint of glass blowers, and you’ll see some amazing stuff on Murano Island throughout December 6th.
One highlight is the Tunnel of Lights show at Chiesa di San Pietro Martire.
Plus, you’ll see some incredible chandeliers crafted by top artists and Murano’s famous furnaces in action.

Keep in mind that this church is quite popular, so it’s advisable to arrive early to secure a spot inside the basilica.

Catch a Lively Performance at Palazzo Barbarigo Minotto
One place you should definitely visit if you want to see a live performance is Palazzo Barbarigo Minotto.
It’s all about classical music and opera, and it’s pretty special.
And just a little info: The palace is actually a classic example of Venetian architecture dating back to the 15th century.
Here, you can expect some frescoes, carvings, and super fancy furnishings.
So, on December 2, they’re showcasing “La Traviata” by Giuseppe Verdi, followed by “Rigoletto” on December 6.
For their tickets: “La Traviata” goes for €105, while “Rigoletto” is slightly cheaper at €104—not bad for such an intimate cultural experience.
And you can choose your seat for free. The acoustics were actually incredible from anywhere in the hall.
But we greatly advise you to go to the front row to have the best view.
So, you better show up early to secure those prime seats unless you don’t mind being serenaded by the back of someone’s wig.

It’s all about Antonio Vivaldi’s famous masterpiece, and we can really say that it’s something you don’t want to miss.
Then, on Dec 2 and 28, they have the “Baroque and Opera, I Musici Veneziani” concerts.
These ones feature a mix of Baroque music and operatic arias that really bring out the historical vibe of the place.

You’ll spot panettone everywhere in Venice, from bakeries to Christmas markets.
